Most lawyers who have tried AI for research have the same story. The answer looked confident, the citation looked real, and then it didn’t hold up. The problem usually isn’t the AI. It’s that nobody told the AI where it was allowed to look, what counted as reliable, or what to do when it came up empty.
That was the focus of today’s mastermind session and the private coaching that followed: building the research side of the AI paralegal the right way, with restraints first.
Why research rules come before research
An AI with open access to the internet and no instructions will fill gaps. In most work, that’s a feature. In legal work, it’s a liability. A research system for a law firm has to answer three questions before it ever answers a legal one: where does the AI look first, where else is it allowed to go, and what does it do when it can’t find a reliable answer.
Get those three answers right and the AI stops guessing. Leave them open and you are proofreading a confident stranger.
Tier one: your firm’s own research database
The first place your AI looks is the research you already trust. For family law firms, we install our research database as part of the system, built and tested inside an active Florida family law practice. For firms outside family law, we build the database with you and automate it as we go, so every verified answer your team pulls becomes part of the library the AI checks next time.
This is the tier that compounds. The more your firm uses it, the less often the AI has to leave it.
Tier two: approved, safe sources only
If the answer isn’t in the database, the AI doesn’t wander. It goes only to the specific websites your firm has approved as safe for research, and nowhere else. You decide that list. The AI follows it.
Tier three: the hand-off to your research provider
Here is the rule that matters most. If the AI still can’t find reliable information, it stops and says so. It doesn’t improvise an answer to be helpful.
Instead, it hands you the exact prompts to run in your legal research provider, written for the specific question it couldn’t answer. You run them, bring the results back, and the system updates. The gap that sent you to your provider today is closed for the next matter.
What this changes for your firm
You get an AI paralegal that knows the difference between what it knows and what it doesn’t. Your attorneys still verify every authority before it goes into anything filed, because that responsibility doesn’t move. What moves is the time spent chasing answers the AI should have flagged instead of invented, and the time spent re-researching questions your firm already answered last month.
The tool is yours. The rules are yours. The database grows with your practice.
